Important information regarding Firearms ID card and purchase permit applications from Chief Mark D. Roddy:
All Firearms ID card and Handgun Purchase Permit applications will be processed with an expected delay due to the COVID-19 response and recovery. FARS, the online portal, will continue to accept new applications and pass them along to our agency; however, it is expected that the background investigations and processing times will be significantly delayed. It is important to note that initial firearm ID card applications will be indefinitely delayed due to the closure of the States contracted fingerprint vendor sites. This portion of the background process will continue as soon as non-essential businesses are allowed to reopen.
The process of delivering the Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards and/or Handgun Purchase Permits may be modified (i.e. mailing permits, pickup from a drop box, etc…) and will be handled on a case by case basis.
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System used by firearms dealers is currently suspended, and all firearm dealers are currently closed after being deemed non-essential businesses. Handgun Purchase Permits are valid for 90 days and can be extended for an additional 90 days for a total validity period of 180 days. It is possible that Handgun Purchase Permits issued during this time frame may expire prior to the end of the COVID-19 response. Handgun Purchase Permits will not be extended past the 180 days from the date of issuance and will require you to reapply for a new permit. Any exceptions to this requirement will be addressed by the NJSP Firearms Unit and the respective retail firearms dealer will handle those exceptions.
We are providing this information so applicants can make an informed decision on submitting an application in FARS at this time.

The Hanover Township Police are now accepting online applications for new and replacement Firearms Identification Cards as well as permits to purchase a handgun. You can apply online by clicking here
The first thing the online form asks for is our ORI number. The ORI Number for the Hanover Township Police Department is: NJ0141200
When you enter this number, verify that the agency name is correct, HANOVER TWP PD. If you submit an application to the wrong agency you will not be issued a refund by the State of New Jersey and will have to resubmit your application and pay again. This online application is managed by the New Jersey State Police, not the Hanover Township Police Department; however, our detectives conduct the background investigation and issue the documents.
If you have any firearms related questions please contact the New Jersey State Police Firearms Unit.
